“I’m told I need to take a CPR AED course. I’ve heard of CPR but what is AED?”
AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator. When a person experiences a sudden cardiac arrest, the heart stops beating normally. The use of an AED can eliminate the abnormal heart rhythm by depolarizing (electrical change) the electrical system of the heart. Doing this will allow the heart to repolarize (return to normal) and return to normal electrical function. The use of an AED is recommended on any victim experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.
All cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) courses otherwise known as CPR classes now require training in the use of an AED. The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) issues recommendations on resuscitation training. At KareCore – Health Safety Wellness we only work with certifying partners that adhere to these recommendations.
How does an AED Work?

Electrical impulses contract the muscles surrounding the heart to provide oxygenated blood to the body. The rhythm of the heart is controlled by a natural pacemaker. This pacemaker is called the sinus node, located on the right atrium (RA) in one of the upper chambers of the heart.
AED’s are available in many areas within the community. They can be found in schools, athletic events, hotels, office buildings, hospitals, retail locations, and airports to name a few! During courses provided by KareCore – Health Safety Wellness students will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with AED’s and their use.
